Greenland tours and tickets: fjord boat trips, city walks and kaffemik
Every tour you can book online in Greenland, side by side: Nuuk fjord cruises, a fishing trip, city tours, Greenlandic food, coffee with a local family and guided runs. Prices, durations, meeting points, and which one fits your trip.
Almost every tour you can book online starts in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. On a first visit, take a boat into Nuuk Fjord and add a short city walk with the National Museum. Tours run in small or private groups, so prices are high: from about €240 for a guided walk and €500 for a boat trip.
- First boat trip 🛥️ Nuuk Fjord, 2 h
- Boat trip with food 🧺 Fjord picnic cruise
- History on foot 🏛️ Walk + museum
- Meet a local family ☕ Kaffemik
Greenland has about 56,000 people and no roads between its towns. You reach each town by plane or boat, and once you are there, most of what you came to see is on the water: fjords, icebergs, whales and mountains that drop straight into the sea. That is why boat trips are the core of Greenland’s tours. Nuuk, the capital, has the widest choice you can book online, with fjord cruises, a fishing trip, city walks, food tastings and a kaffemik, the Greenlandic coffee gathering, in a local home. This page lists each of them with its price, length and meeting point, so you can choose before you fly.
Greenland tours in 30 seconds
- Nearly every tour starts in Nuuk; one boat trip starts in Paamiut
- Fjord boat trips last 2 to 3.5 hours on closed, heated boats
- Most tours are small or private groups, often with hotel pickup
- Boats meet at the Tide Water Steps; city walks at the Katuaq Cultural Centre
- Whales are never guaranteed and appear mostly in summer and autumn
- You book in euros online; in Greenland people pay in Danish kroner (DKK)
What tours can you book in Greenland?
In short: you can book boat trips into the fjord, a fishing trip, city tours on foot or by car, Greenlandic food tastings, a kaffemik in a local home, guided runs and a language lesson. Nearly all of them start in Nuuk. Ilulissat and Disko Bay, the iceberg region further north, have very few tours you can book online so far.
Greenland’s tour market is small. Most operators are local companies with one or two boats or a handful of guides, and many tours are private: you book the boat or the guide for your own party instead of a seat among fifty strangers. You will notice three consequences straight away. Prices are high, because a boat and a captain cost the same for one guest as for four. Departures are few, so popular summer days sell out. And the tours are personal: your captain or guide usually grew up in Nuuk and talks about fishing, hunting and family life as well as the sights.
The tours fall into four groups. Boat trips go into Nuuk Fjord, one of the largest fjord systems in the world, past the mountain Sermitsiaq and seasonal icebergs. City tours cover the old Colonial Harbour, Nuuk Cathedral and the Greenland National Museum, on foot or by car. Food and culture tours add Greenlandic dishes, craft beer or a kaffemik. Active tours are guided runs and hikes on the edge of the city.

Two listings need a careful read. The “Arctic Circle Trail Guided Hiking Tour” and the “Guided City Walking Tour” both show a starting price of €30, but their descriptions are general. The Arctic Circle Trail is a 160 km route between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut that usually takes eight to ten days, and the city tour covers Nuuk, Sisimiut and Ilulissat without any travel between them. Open each listing and check what the price covers before you book.
Which Greenland tour should you choose?
In short: for a first boat trip, the 2-hour Nuuk Fjord sightseeing tour. For a longer day with food, the picnic cruise. For history, the walking tour with the National Museum. To meet Greenlanders, a kaffemik. If you would rather not walk much, the city tour by car.

Boat tours in Nuuk Fjord
In short: three boat trips leave Nuuk: a 2-hour sightseeing tour, a 3.5-hour cruise with a Greenlandic picnic and a 3.5-hour private fishing trip. All three use closed, heated boats. You see Sermitsiaq, islands, waterfalls and seasonal icebergs, and sometimes seals, seabirds or whales.
Nuuk sits at the mouth of Nuup Kangerlua, the Nuuk Fjord, which branches deep inland towards the ice sheet. Across the water stands Sermitsiaq, a 1,210-metre peak you can see from almost anywhere in town. Ten minutes after leaving the harbour, the city is a line of coloured dots behind you, and ahead there is only rock, water and ice. The animation below follows a typical two-hour trip. Real routes change with the ice and the weather, and the captain decides on the day where to go.
Nuuk Fjord Sightseeing Boat Tour: 2 hours
This is the simplest boat trip and the one we recommend for a first visit. You meet the captain at the Tide Water Steps in Nuuk Harbour, near Naalagaasat, ten minutes before departure, and spend two hours in the fjord on a closed, heated boat. There are no stops, no meal and no pickup. The captain adds a little commentary and leaves you time to look and take photos. It starts at €506. Book the Nuuk Fjord Sightseeing Boat Tour.
Nuuk Fjord cruise with Greenlandic picnic: 3.5 hours
This private cruise goes further into the fjord and serves a picnic of local food on board, while an English-speaking guide talks about Greenlandic culture and everyday life. Pickup and drop-off are included. Solo travellers can book it but pay the two-person minimum. Travellers rate it 4.4 out of 5, and it starts at €702. Book the fjord cruise with picnic.
Nuuk Fjord Arctic fishing trip: 3.5 hours
Fishing has fed Greenland for generations, and on this private trip you try it yourself. The guide takes you to the day’s fishing grounds on a heated boat, with rods, tackle, bait, coffee and tea provided. Depending on the season you can catch Atlantic cod, redfish, Arctic char, halibut or wolffish. Pickup is included; fishing clothes are not, so dress warmly. From €857. Book the Arctic fishing trip, or read more on our fishing trips page.
- Closed, heated boats
- English-speaking crew
- Free cancellation on most dates

Seasickness: the fjord is sheltered but not always flat. If you get seasick, take something before you board and choose the 2-hour trip. The boat tours are not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility.
Paamiut: a fjord and iceberg trip away from the crowds
In short: Paamiut is a small fishing town on Greenland’s southwest coast, south of Nuuk. Its 3-hour boat trip goes through quiet fjords with drifting icebergs, from €776, with hotel transfers and hot drinks included.
Few visitors reach Paamiut, which is the point of this trip. A local captain takes you through the fjords around town, past islands and steep coastline, and tells you about life in a community that lives from the sea. The listing says his English is limited, so expect a quiet trip with simple commentary rather than a guided talk. Boarding is at Paamiut Harbour, and you get the exact spot after booking. Paamiut has no road link to anywhere, so the tour suits travellers already flying there. Book the Paamiut fjord and iceberg tour or see our Paamiut guide.

City tours in Nuuk
In short: Nuuk’s centre is small enough to walk. On foot you see the Colonial Harbour, Hans Egede’s House, Nuuk Cathedral, the Mother of the Sea sculpture and the Greenland National Museum. Tours by car also reach viewpoints over the fjord and the newer districts.
Nuuk is one of the smallest capitals in the world, with under 20,000 people. The old town around the Colonial Harbour has wooden houses painted red, yellow and blue, the small Nuuk Cathedral and Hans Egede’s House, named after the Danish-Norwegian missionary who founded the town in 1728. On the shore below stands the Mother of the Sea, a bronze of the Inuit sea spirit that the tide covers and uncovers. A short walk away, the Greenland National Museum shows the Qilakitsoq mummies, found in the north of Greenland and about 500 years old, along with kayaks, clothing and tools from more than 4,000 years of life in the Arctic.
Walking tour with the National Museum: 2 hours
You meet outside the Katuaq Cultural Centre, the wave-shaped building at Imaneq 21, and walk through the centre with a local guide who connects the landmarks to Greenland’s Inuit history, the Danish colonial period and life today. The tour ends with a guided visit to the National Museum; entry is included. From €241, it is the cheapest proper city tour. Book the walking tour with National Museum.
For an hour more, the walking tour with museum and Greenlandic tasting (3 hours, private, from €335) adds a tasting of Arctic specialities at Café Nuan in Qinngorput, about 15 minutes from the centre, where taxis and buses take you back.
City tours by car
Nuuk is hilly, and in winter the pavements can be icy. The City Highlights by Car tour (3 hours, from €428) drives you between the sights in a heated car or minibus, with photo stops at viewpoints, then serves a tasting at Café Nuan: smoked Arctic char, dried musk ox, berry compote and herbal tea. It suits families, older travellers and anyone who would rather not walk much. The Hidden Gems Scenic Drive (2 hours, from €351) is built around photography: the guide takes you to the best angles on Sermitsiaq, the fjord and the coloured houses, and helps you frame the shots on your own phone or camera.
One day in Nuuk? Take a city walk in the morning and a fjord trip in the afternoon. Leave at least an hour between them, because boat times can shift with the weather.
Kaffemik and Greenlandic food
In short: a kaffemik is a Greenlandic open house with coffee, cake and conversation, held for birthdays and family celebrations. Two tours take you to one in a local home. Other tours offer tastings of Arctic food, such as musk ox, reindeer and smoked fish, or Greenlandic craft beer.
When a Greenlandic family celebrates a birthday, a child’s first day at school or a confirmation, they open their home. Guests come and go through the day, drink coffee, eat homemade cakes and sometimes traditional dishes, talk for a while and leave to make room for the next visitors. The kaffemik tours recreate this with a host family, so you sit at a real kitchen table and can ask anything you like about life in Greenland. Read more in our kaffemik guide.
Old Town Walk & Kaffemik: 2 hours
The first hour is a walk through the Colonial Harbour past Hans Egede’s House, the cathedral and the Mother of the Sea. The second hour is coffee or tea, homemade cakes and snacks in a local home. Pickup is included, and the tour is private, from €535. It is not suitable for wheelchair users. Book the Old Town Walk & Kaffemik.
Full City Tour with Kaffemik: 4 hours
This is the longest city tour. You walk the old town with entry to the National Museum, drive out to viewpoints over Sermitsiaq and the newer neighbourhoods, and finish at a kaffemik. Pickup is included, from €736. Book the Full City Tour with Kaffemik.
Food tastings, beer and a language lesson
The Greenlandic Food Tasting and Storytelling (2 hours, from €767) takes place at Café Nuan, about five minutes from Nuuk airport, by the light of a qulliq, the traditional oil lamp. You taste reindeer or lamb depending on the season, smoked seafood and traditional bread while the host explains how Greenlanders hunt, fish and preserve food through the winter. It is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. More dishes are on our Greenlandic food page.
The walk with Greenlandic beer and Arctic sliders (2 hours, from €268) crosses the Colonial Harbour, stops at Killut, which the listing calls Greenland’s only distillery, when it is open, and ends at a café with an Arctic burger and local craft beer or an alcohol-free option. It is for adults only. The Greenlandic language lesson (2 hours, from €241, in Nuuk or online) teaches the basics of Kalaallisut, starting with “aluu” for hello, from a linguist trained at the University of Greenland.

Running and hiking tours around Nuuk
In short: a 65-minute guided city run from €66 with hotel pickup, and a 3.5-hour trail run from €120 into the hills behind Nuuk. A third listing covers the Arctic Circle Trail, a multi-day trek far from Nuuk.
The Guided Running Tour is the cheapest tour on the list and a good way to see the city on your first morning. A local runner picks you up at your hotel or in the centre and leads a run of about 55 minutes, with stops at historic sites and viewpoints and talk about Greenlandic politics, language and history. The pace is easy enough for anyone who can run 5 km. In winter the guide lends you ice spikes. Children under 7 can’t join.
The trail run with a local guide starts at the Tikiusaaq bus stop (no. 50), at the first roundabout in Qinngorput. Bus 1 gets there from the centre in about 17 minutes and runs every 20 minutes. The guide matches pace and distance to your group, from keen hikers to ultra runners, with stops for views, water and a snack. It runs on weekends all year, with extra afternoon departures in summer and autumn.
The Arctic Circle Trail runs 160 km from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut, past lakes, valleys and tundra, with simple huts along parts of the route. Most hikers take eight to ten days and camp. You need your own tent, sleeping bag and food, so the guided listing is a starting point for planning rather than a day trip from Nuuk.
How booking a tour in Greenland works
In short: choose a date and group size online, pay, and get a ticket on your phone. Meet the guide at the meeting point ten minutes early or wait for your pickup. Most tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before.
- 📅Choose date and groupOn private tours the price depends on how many of you there are.
- 🔍Check what’s includedPickup, food, museum entry and gear vary from tour to tour.
- 📱Keep your ticketShow it on your phone or printed.
- ⏱️Arrive 10 min earlyOr be ready in your hotel lobby for pickup.
Prices look high next to tours in Europe, and private pricing explains most of it. The “from” price on a private tour is usually for the smallest group. Some tours, like the picnic cruise, have a two-person minimum, so a solo traveller pays for two. The booking page shows the total for your group before you pay, and it often works out cheaper per person for three or four.
Weather decides a lot in Greenland. If wind or ice stops a boat from leaving, the operator cancels and you are offered another date or a refund. That is why it pays to book a boat trip early in your stay, so a cancelled day can move to the next. Most listings also allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, and some let you reserve now and pay later. Check the conditions on each listing before you pay.
You book in euros or your own currency online, but Greenland uses the Danish krone (DKK). Card payments work almost everywhere in Nuuk, and cash is useful for small purchases in smaller towns.
Tours for cruise passengers in Nuuk
In short: both main meeting points are a short walk from where cruise passengers come ashore. The fjord boat trips leave from the Tide Water Steps, about five minutes’ walk from the port, and the walking tours start at the Katuaq Cultural Centre, about five minutes from the shuttle drop-off.
With a few hours in port, choose a 2-hour tour: the fjord sightseeing trip or the walking tour with the National Museum. Book a start time that gets you back at least an hour before your ship’s all-aboard time, since the ship won’t wait for a private tour. Several walking tours offer pickup at the cruise terminal for an extra charge. More tips are on our Nuuk for cruise passengers page.
When to go: tours through the year
In short: June to August brings the longest days and the most boat departures. Humpback whales feed in the fjord mostly in summer and autumn. From September to April you can see the northern lights on clear, dark nights. Nuuk lies just south of the Arctic Circle, so it has very long summer days but no true midnight sun.
| Season | What it’s like | Best tours |
|---|---|---|
| June – August | Light until late at night, rarely above 10 °C, most departures | Fjord boat trips, fishing, trail runs |
| September – October | Autumn colours on the tundra, whales still around, first northern lights | Boat trips, city tours, kaffemik |
| November – February | Short days, snow and ice, long dark nights | City tours by car, food tastings, northern lights |
| March – May | Days grow fast, snow on the mountains, cold but often clear | Running tours, city walks, photography drives |
For whales, the best odds are on a boat trip between June and October; read our whale watching in Nuuk page for more. Month-by-month weather and daylight are on our best time to visit page.

What to wear and bring on a Greenland tour
Even in July, the air on the fjord is cold and the wind on deck is colder. The boats are heated inside, but you will want to step out for photos. Dress in layers you can add and remove.
A fleece or down jacket under a windproof shell, even in summer.
Hands get cold quickly holding a camera on deck.
Light reflecting off ice and water is strong.
Take them before you board if you need them.
For wet decks, rocky viewpoints and icy pavements.
Phone batteries drain fast in the cold.
Our what to wear in Greenland page has a full packing list by season.
Getting to Nuuk and around Greenland
In short: you fly. Nuuk’s airport takes direct international flights from Copenhagen and Reykjavik, and seasonal flights from North America. Between towns you take Air Greenland’s domestic flights or, in summer, the coastal passenger ship along the west coast.
Nuuk’s airport now has a runway long enough for large jets, so you no longer need to change in Kangerlussuaq to reach the capital. From the airport to the centre takes about 10 minutes by taxi or city bus. Inside Nuuk, buses connect the centre with the newer districts such as Qinngorput. To reach Paamiut, Ilulissat or Sisimiut you fly or take the Arctic Umiaq Line coastal ship, which runs along the west coast in the warmer months. Our getting to Nuuk page covers routes and travel times.
Beyond Nuuk: Ilulissat, Disko Bay and Kangerlussuaq
Greenland’s most famous ice is further north. In Ilulissat, the UNESCO-listed Icefjord fills the sea with icebergs the size of city blocks, and boat trips into Disko Bay sail among them. Kangerlussuaq, the old international hub, is the easiest place to reach the edge of the ice sheet by road. Very few tours in these places can be booked online yet; most are sold by local operators directly. Ilulissat is getting its own international airport, and we add new tours to this page as they become bookable.

Questions about tours in Greenland
What is the best tour in Greenland for a first visit?
A boat trip into Nuuk Fjord. The 2-hour sightseeing tour shows Sermitsiaq, islands and seasonal icebergs from a heated boat. If you have more time, add the walking tour with the Greenland National Museum.
How much does a boat tour in Greenland cost?
Boat trips from Nuuk start at about €506 for 2 hours, €702 for the 3.5-hour picnic cruise and €857 for the private fishing trip. Private tours are priced for the smallest group, so the cost per person drops when more of you book together.
Where do boat tours in Nuuk leave from?
From the Tide Water Steps in Nuuk Harbour, near Naalagaasat. Arrive ten minutes before departure. Tours with pickup collect you from your hotel.
Do I need to book Greenland tours in advance?
Yes. Most tours run in small or private groups with few departures, and summer dates sell out. Book before you travel, and put a boat trip early in your stay in case the weather forces a change of date.
Will I see whales on a fjord tour?
Maybe. Humpback whales feed in Nuuk Fjord mostly in summer and autumn, and seals and seabirds are common. No operator guarantees a sighting.
Can I see icebergs from Nuuk?
Yes, on a boat trip into the fjord, where seasonal ice drifts down from the glaciers. The largest icebergs are further north, in Ilulissat and Disko Bay.
When can I see the northern lights in Nuuk?
From about September to April, on clear, dark nights. Get away from the street lights of the centre for the best view.
Is there a midnight sun in Nuuk?
Not quite. Nuuk lies just south of the Arctic Circle, so the sun sets briefly even in June, but the nights stay light. For a true midnight sun you have to go north of the Arctic Circle, to Sisimiut or Ilulissat.
What is a kaffemik?
A Greenlandic open house with coffee, homemade cake and conversation, held for birthdays and family celebrations. Two tours in Nuuk take you to a kaffemik in a local home.
Are the boats heated?
Yes. The fjord boat trips and the fishing trip from Nuuk use closed, heated boats. Bring warm clothes anyway for time on deck.
Can I cancel a Greenland tour?
Most tours on GetYourGuide can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start. If the operator cancels because of the weather, you get another date or a refund.
Do tours include hotel pickup?
Many do: the picnic cruise, the fishing trip, the city tours by car, the kaffemik tours and the running tour. The 2-hour sightseeing boat and the museum walking tour start at a meeting point instead.
Are there tours for cruise passengers in Nuuk?
Yes. The fjord boats leave about five minutes’ walk from the port, and the walking tours start at the Katuaq Cultural Centre, five minutes from the shuttle drop-off. Choose a 2-hour tour and plan to be back an hour before all-aboard.
Can I book tours in Ilulissat online?
Very few so far. Most Ilulissat and Disko Bay tours are sold directly by local operators. We add them to this page when they become bookable online.
What currency is used in Greenland?
The Danish krone (DKK). You can book tours online in euros or your own currency, and cards are accepted almost everywhere in Nuuk.
Are Greenland tours suitable for wheelchair users?
Most are not. The boat trips, walking tours and kaffemik tours list limited mobility as unsuitable. The city tour by car involves the least walking; contact the operator through the booking page before you book.
